Week 1
Jan 25 Introduction to class
Purpose: to emphasize the focus on learning; to get to know one another, to understand what integrated reading and writing is and to begin to understand how the class will function
Jan 27 Finish note taking HO for “As Data Overflows” and turn in. The handout is available on the blog (english117vasudeva.blogspot.com)
Read pp. 23-27 in Real Questions, Make a list of the steps to writing a summary (use your own words and full sentences)
Week 2
Feb 1 Notes (using HO from blog) and Typed Summary of “Morals and the Machine” in English 117 book is due. Make sure you have your folders to begin keeping your work that is related to your essays.
Feb 3 Read “Google is Making us Stupid” in Real Questions, p. 574-583, take notes using your form on the blog (all note taking should be done using this form)
Week 3
Feb 8 start reading Little Brother and preparing your fiction summary of pp. 1-68,
read pp. 44-53 in Real Questions, write a summary statement of each Chunk starting with “Tailor your Thesis to your situation” and ending with “Provide evidence appropriate” (for a total of four summary statements). Make sure each summary statement is a complete sentence.
Remember! A fiction summary is different from a nonfiction summary. Be sure to follow the directions for the fiction summary when working on Little Brother,
Feb 10 Using the instructions I gave you on how to write a fiction summary, write a summary of Little Brother pp. 1-68 due. Meet in computer lab
Week 4
Feb 15 No Class
Feb. 17 Note taking and skeleton due from last class. Make sure to bring Real Questions to class
Week six
Feb 22 Read pp. 59-61, “The good, The Bad and the Technological” in Real Questions. Fill out the compare and contrast rubric.
Feb. 24 , Read “the Many Ethical Implications of Technology” at this link on Scientific American website. Meet in lab http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-many-ethical-implications-of-emerging-technologies/
Write down the main idea from each chunk (There are four chunks) and the thesis.

Week seven
Feb 29 Read How to Survive the Age of Distraction pp. 566-569 in Real Questions, fill out paragraph purpose and main idea HO
Mar 2 Op Ed due (remember, at least 1000 words), meet in lab
Week 8
March 7 Quiz on Little Brother to page 132
March 9 Read pp. 31-40 Rhetorical analysis in Real Questions and write down the main ideas; Op Ed revisions are due
Week Nine
March 14 Work on Rhetorical Analysis and Reading Little Brother
March 16 Summary of 133-230 in Little Brother due, meet in lab,
Week Ten
March 28 meet in lab; Little Brother should be finished.
Read pp. 54-58, incorporate sources appropriately, in Real Questions, be prepared for quiz
Please bring three copies of your Little Brother essay to March 30 class (at least 4 full paragraphs)
March 30 First Draft of Little Brother Rhetorical Analysis is due at least 2 full pages (4 full paragraphs) and please bring three copies of the draft
Week Eleven
Apr 4 read “Will Evolving Forms of Journalism be an Improvement” and the Yes and No Positions on this topic (p. 101-113). Select either the Yes or No position essay and take notes on note taking form. Meet in computer lab

April 13 Read Streams of Consciousness, p. 93 in Eng. 117, Answer the following questions using the reading to support your answers
- How does the value of journalism change when we strip away the context that a credible publication provides?
- Adler discusses four “overlapping and mutually reinforcing trends”. Which one do you think has the biggest impact on journalism and why?
- State specifically what roles photos currently play in journalism. How is that different from journalism before social media?
- What are the young social media users looking for in their news sites? Why?
- What is Circa and why is it mentioned in this essay?
- Who do young news readers trust and why?
- Make a Venn diagram of the old and new media using two overlapping circles (have at least five entries in each side of the chart, and at least three in the center that both share). Use the essay and your own thinking to fill this out.
- How could your news site address the issues raised in this article?
