Engaging with the text
Purpose: to make meaning out of what we read so that we can see how it might apply to our own lives
Always use full sentences and your OWN words (worth 25 points). Extra complex vocab words are extra credit. Make sure to highlight them. Each word is only extra credit when used the first time.

1. Write down the Title
2. Question you think the selection will address (revise after reading, if necessary)
3. Answer to the question the selection raises (the THESIS)
4. What prior knowledge did you have about this topic? Have you discussed it in another class? Read about it elsewhere or in this class? What preconceived ideas do you have on the topic?
Chunking
If the text is not divided into chunks, you will need to decide on the chunks when the author changes ideas. You will always have at least three chunks.
Chunk 1
- Tentative Purpose
- Question the text raises
- Answer/Main idea (what does the author want you to believe in this section) (This is the reason for the skeleton)
- Vocabulary defined
- Your response to the chunk (do NOT answer the questions. What did you think of the ideas and structure of this chunk? See response questions below)
- Question you have about chunk
Continue this process for all Chunks on a separate sheet of paper.
Turning reading into Writing
Provide a page number and an example for each question. Use your words!
- What strategies does the author use to engage the reader? Be specific
- How does the author end his or her piece? Be specific
- What strategies does the writer use to make his or her opinion on this topic clear?
- Who do you think is the intended audience for this piece? What evidence supports your answer?
- List and quote at least one figure of speech that is used (metaphor, cliche, analogy) and explain what it means in your words and how it relates to the main ideas in the chunk
- List one unstated assumption that the author makes.
